Three Generations, One Passion

Today, three generations of our family continue the tradition. Antonio and Luigi, along with Antonio’s daughter Sophia, are proud to carry forward the spirit and values that our parents instilled — hard work, fresh ingredients, and warm hospitality. You'll still find our mother at the bakery six days a week, greeting customers with a smile.

Our Story Begins with Amedeo

A&L Bakery began with the vision and determination of Amedeo Gnerri, who came to Boston with a passion for bread baking rooted in his childhood in Calvi, a small town in Italy’s Benevento province. After gaining experience in local kitchens and running his own pizzeria, Amedeo opened the bakery that would become A&L.

Bread was always in his heart—his father bought a bakery when Amedeo was a boy, and from that moment, he knew he wanted one of his own. In 1969, he returned to Italy to marry his wife, and together they built a life of hard work and resilience, eventually returning to Boston to start a new chapter.

As the bakery grew, Amedeo traveled back to Italy to bring back the equipment that would help meet demand without sacrificing quality. He named the bakery after his sons, Antonio and Luigi, and passed on not just a business, but a way of life.

Today, Amedeo's spirit lives on in every loaf and every warm greeting.

After more than 45 years, we’re proud to welcome customers to a refreshed A&L Bakery. Following months of renovations, we’ve added a cozy seating area — the perfect spot to enjoy a coffee, a pastry, and a quiet moment. Every treat is still made fresh daily, honoring the traditions that built our bakery.
